Alaska Unusually
8 days and 7 nights

For those looking for a different kind of Alaskan vacation, we present Alaska... Unusually. Based on our popular Alaska National Park Explorer route, this self drive combines the best of Alaska’s scenery and wildlife viewing with the state’s most original accommodation. From dog sledding focused lodges to Mongolian-style yurts perched high on ocean-side cliffs, there’s something special about each of these properties. We roamed the roadsides on a quest for accommodation with originality, style and above all comfort. Along the way, you’ll visit Alaska’s most famous national parks; thrill at views of McKinley and moose in Denali National Park, watch whales and sea otters frolicking in the waves in Kenai Fjords National Park, pass through the dark pines of Chugach National Forest and drive in the shadow of the towering ranges of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, home to the world’s largest, non-polar, icecap!

Travel Itinerary:

Day 01 - Seward
Depart Anchorage to Seward. The Kenai Peninsula offers a stunning drive with its pine forests and tall peaks. On arrival in Seward, transfer 9 miles by water taxi to your overnight accommodation. Evening marine-life cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park; view whales, sea lions, dolphins, sea otters, puffins and kittiwakes. Accommodation: Orca Island Cabins. Featuring 3 sea side yurts and a floating cabin, each offering stunning views, you’ll love Alaska’s relaxing seaside lifestyle.

Day 02 - Valdez
Travel by Alaska Ferry system via the stunning Columbia Glacier. Accommodation: Lake House B&B. Set in a sub-alpine area of lakes located just above Valdez, the Lake House offers some impressive views and great bird/wildlife viewing. As an added twist, the B&B is owned by John Devens, the Mayor of Valdez during the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill. Makes for some interesting breakfast conversation indeed!

Day 03 - Richardson Highway
Keep the camera handy; impressive views of Wrangell St-Elias NP around every corner. The park is home to 9 of the 16 highest peaks in N.America. Today’s route features 2 mountain passes of over 1000m each! Accommodation: Black Rapids Inn. Located in the shadow of the Alaska Range and Black Rapids Glacier, the impressive Inn, just completed in 2007, stands out prominently in the high alpine area. The lodge owners are also restoring an original 1902 roadhouse.

Day 04 - Fairbanks
Located on the Chena River, visit the University of Alaska Museum or Creamers Field. Accommodation: Aurora Express; authentic Alaska Railroad cars renovated to historical periods located in a forested area overlooking greater Fairbanks, the Tanana Valley, & Alaska Mountain Range.

Day 05 - Denali National Park
Travel to Denali, home to North America’s tallest peak (Mt. McKinley 20,320ft). Accommodation: The Earthsong Lodge. Located just north of the park entrance in the sub-alpine just about treeline, Earthsong was hand built by owners, experienced 1000 mile Yukon Quest and Iditarod Sled Dog racers. Each stay includes an introduction to this exciting sport and do the care and handling of these wonderful animals. Delightful, private log cabins await!

Day 06 - Denali National Park
Wildlife tour into the heart of the park. Caribou, moose, grizzly bears, wolves and Dall sheep often seen.

Day 07 - Anchorage
Return to Anchorage along the Parks Highway. Visit Wasilla, home of the Iditarod. Overnight: South Bluffs’s B&B. Located just south of Anchorage, South Bluffs offers a style and comfort in Alaska. This all suite B&B features spacious bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs, plush beds with fine linens, and small kitchens for in room eating. The property boasts a large hot tub overlooking the mountains and ocean, and decks for enjoying meals or sunsets.

Day 08 - Anchorage
End.
