06/07 Sitka.
Sitka’s history is as old as time itself. Home to the Kiksadi Tlingit people for thousands of years, the area was selected by Alexander Baranof as Russia’s American capital in 1799. For more than 80 years the Russians and Tlingits were partners in the fur trade before Russia sold Alaska to the USA in 1867 for 1.2 million dollars, a sum almost unheard of at the time and most ridiculed by the American public. Sitka today, set among deep fjords, towering coastal mountains and cascading glaciers is a wilderness paradise and one of Alaska’s most interesting cities. 24 buildings are on the US National Historic Register! You can still experience the Russian influence at the Russian Bishop House and the Block House or by taking in a performance by the New Archangel Dancers. Sitka’s Tlingit history comes alive at the Southeast Alaska Indian Cultural Centre. Get up close and personal at the Fortress of the Bear, a rehabilitation centre dedicated to the protection of orphaned brown bear cubs and view humpback whales at Whale Park. And when you get your fill of history, a wide variety of wilderness activities such as sea kayaking, rainforest hiking tours, fishing, wildlife viewing – you can even hike the only volcano in Alaska’s southeast reagion – are all available.
